Installing and Running Zork Games on Modern Operating Systems
Over the past few years I’ve been developing guides to installing games from the Zork series. These games are getting older and running them on modern operating systems is less intuitive than it was on older operating systems. Click the link above to learn more. Feedback is welcome!
I also now maintain the Zork Library website.
I have Vista – made the modifications and I get an error “Error 17004: c:\Zork\eng\Main.cpp; Line 231; Invalid file line in nemesis.zix”
????

For some reason the dosbox shortcut to rtz didn’t work. I just get dosbox and anytime I want to play zork I have to install it again and again…and again. I guess I missed something in the RTZ-vista install instructions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Having a problem with ZGI. Installed it per your instructions, but when i go to run it, there is a cursor on the screen (the Zork cursor) and nothing else. If I mouse around , the cursor will turn highlighted. I click there, and the game crashes.
I’ve tried different compatibility settings and everything, but no luck. Any advice?
I used the Dosbox version for Windows XP. I’ve had no probs.
Hi there. I installed ZGI on vista today. Your guide was very helpful. Only problem is, I can’t seem to restore my game, I get a box saying There was a problem with Zork. Its a bit of a bummer cos I have to start the game again every time I want to play it. I installed ZN using your guide about a year ago and there are no problems with that one. Just wondered if this is a common problem or is just my system?
@Justin: Thanks for the feedback!
@Charlotte: Where did you install the files for ZGI? By default, it will install within the Program Files folder, but Windows Vista and 7 lock down that folder, which breaks ZGI. Install elsewhere, like C:\Games\ZGI as I recommend in my guide. If that doesn’t fix it, you may need to run the game from an administrator account in Windows. Depending on how your user accounts are setup, running as a regular user may not work.
I created the folder C:\Games\ZGI when I installed, I wouldn’t have dared do anything other than what you recommend! LOL. And, this is my personal laptop so I am the only user and run as Administrator. I don’t know what the problem is :S Maybe i need to buy an old system dedicated to playing Zork on
That is weird. That’s a new one for me. Join other Zork fans and I at The Zork Library at http://www.thezorklibrary.com . Ask your question there any maybe someone else has run into this issue.
Is everything okay with The Zork Library? It’s suddenly redirecting here.
Thanks for the comment. I screwed up something on my domain settings, but have fixed it now. The Zork Library should show up correctly soon.

“I have Win7 – made the modifications and I get an error “Error 17004: c:\Zork\eng\Main.cpp; Line 231; Invalid file line in nemesis.zix”
